A Guide to Platform 9¾

A Guide to Platform 9¾

Welcome to Platform 9¾, the magical gateway to the Hogwarts Express, the train that will take you on the adventure of a lifetime to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. If you’ve received your acceptance letter and are preparing for your first journey to Hogwarts, this guide will ensure you’re fully prepared for navigating this unique and exciting platform.

Finding Platform 9¾

Platform 9¾ is located at King’s Cross Station in London, one of the busiest stations in the wizarding world, yet its entrance is hidden to the Muggle eye. This means you must first find your way through the crowds of Muggles without arousing suspicion—don’t worry, the wizarding community has been perfecting the art of discreet magical travel for centuries!

To reach Platform 9¾:

  1. Head to the Main Concourse: As you arrive at King’s Cross Station, make your way to the main concourse where most of the platforms are located. Look for the signs indicating platforms 9 and 10. These are the closest to the secret platform you’ll need to access.

  2. Locate the Barrier: Between Platform 9 and Platform 10 lies a solid-looking brick wall. However, do not be deterred by its appearance. This is the magical barrier that leads to Platform 9¾.

    • It’s not visible to Muggles, but to any witch or wizard, it’s a perfect and safe passage to your destination. You can’t simply walk through it like a door; instead, you must approach the barrier confidently and with purpose.
  3. The Approach: Stand a few feet away from the barrier, gather your courage, and make sure you’re not distracted. The key to accessing Platform 9¾ is to walk briskly towards the wall as if you are going to collide with it. It’s essential to not hesitate.

    • DO NOT stop or look back at the wall once you begin. Simply walk straight ahead and as you approach, you will feel the magical barrier gently parting to allow you through.

    • TIP: Don’t worry if you’re nervous. The barrier may seem intimidating at first, but the magical charm will guide you through safely.

  4. Arriving on Platform 9¾: Once you’ve passed through the barrier, you’ll find yourself on the other side, standing on Platform 9¾. It’s a bustling, magical place, filled with excited students, parents, and a variety of magical creatures, all preparing to board the Hogwarts Express. The platform is decorated with cheerful signs indicating the train’s departure to Hogwarts, and a large, gleaming train sits ready to take you on your journey.

Boarding the Hogwarts Express

  • The Hogwarts Express is a magnificent scarlet steam train, and it’s the transportation of choice for all Hogwarts students. As soon as you step onto Platform 9¾, you will see the train, with its signature red carriages and billowing smoke.

  • You should aim to arrive early to get the best seats. First years typically board the train with their fellow Housemates. Prefects will guide you to your carriage once the platform is cleared.

  • Once you board the train, find your compartment. First-year students usually sit together, but there’s no harm in asking older students or the Prefects for directions. You’ll be able to enjoy your journey with snacks from the trolley (including Chocolate Frogs, Pumpkin Pasties, and Butterbeer) and perhaps make a few new friends.

Helpful Tips for First-Time Travelers

  1. Pack Carefully: While traveling by the Hogwarts Express, you’ll need a few essentials. Make sure to pack your wand, a Hogwarts letter, any magical supplies required for the term, and your timetable. You’ll also want to bring some treats for the journey as the trolley service can be expensive if you’re not prepared.

  2. Don’t Forget Your Luggage: Your trunk and belongings will be magically loaded onto the train for you, but always double-check that your most important items—such as your wand, personal letter, and any magical objects—are within easy reach.

  3. The Trolley: During your journey, a trolley witch will pass through your compartment with a cart of magical snacks and drinks. Be sure to have some Sickles or Galleons handy to buy treats such as Chocolate Frogs, Pumpkin Pasties, Licorice Wands, and the infamous Cauldron Cakes. You might also be able to get a Butterbeer if you’re lucky.

  4. Making Friends: This is a perfect opportunity to meet other first-year students. The Hogwarts Express is famous for being a lively and sociable ride, with many students making lifelong friendships on the journey. If you’re nervous, don’t worry—everyone is in the same boat, and there’s bound to be someone you’ll get along with.

  5. Look Out the Window: The train ride to Hogwarts is magical in itself, offering a beautiful view of the countryside as the train travels through the English countryside. At certain points, you may even see magical creatures, such as Thestrals or Hippogriffs, if you keep a sharp eye out!

At Your Destination: Arriving at Hogwarts

The journey from Platform 9¾ takes several hours, and you’ll eventually approach the grand Hogwarts Castle. As the train passes through the lush Scottish countryside, it’s time to prepare for your arrival.

  1. The Boat Ride: First-year students arrive at Hogwarts in boats across the Black Lake, where they get their first view of the majestic castle. Prefects or other students will help guide you as you board the boats.

  2. The Sorting Ceremony: Upon your arrival at Hogwarts, your first event will be the Sorting Ceremony. This event takes place in the Great Hall and will determine which House you’ll belong to for the duration of your studies.

  3. Welcome Feast: After the Sorting, you’ll be treated to the most incredible Welcome Feast. This lavish banquet is filled with delicious magical foods, and you’ll have the chance to meet your fellow Housemates and begin your magical education.

Remember:

  • Muggle-Ware: Be sure to keep your Muggle items, like phones and other electronic devices, safely stored. They won’t work in the wizarding world, and you may risk attracting attention from curious Muggles.

  • Respect the Rules: Remember, the Hogwarts Express and Platform 9¾ are for students, staff, and family members only. Keep your magical mischief to a minimum and be respectful of other travelers.

  • Keep Your Wand Ready: While travel to Hogwarts is mostly uneventful, always be ready to use your wand in case of magical emergencies or surprises on the way. Keep it safe and tucked in a pocket or robe for easy access.

We hope this guide has prepared you for your magical journey to Hogwarts. Enjoy the ride on the Hogwarts Express, and we look forward to seeing you at the Sorting Ceremony!

Safe travels,
